The Chair of Molecular Genetics and Physiology of Plants at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology is looking for a

postdoc (m,f,x) - Computational evolutionary and comparative plant genomics, for 3 years, 39.83 hours per week, TVL E14

At the Chair of Molecular Genetics and Physiology of Plants, we pursue genome-enabled computational approaches as well as experimental functional analyses to develop an integrated understanding of plant evolutionary adaptations to rapid environmental change. Our goal is to decipher the underlying molecular mechanisms and evolutionary processes (e.g. recent and ongoing projects ERC-Advanced Grant „LEAP-EXTREME“, Transregio TRR 341 „Plant Ecological Genetics“, Research Priority Programme SPP 1819 „Rapid Evolutionary Adaptation“). We take advantage of large-scale sequence data, including novel and extensive existing datasets from genome re-sequencing (> 1000 individuals), methylome sequencing, de novo genome assemblies and transcriptomics (both tissue-based and single-cell) of Arabidopsis-related species exhibiting exceptionally large genetic and phenotypic diversity. We apply genome scans for selection, GWAS, demographic analyses, and regulatory/co-expression networks, for example.

Your tasks:

  •  Answer biological questions employing computer-based analyses of nucleotide sequence data, partly together with environmental and/or phenotypic parameters, population genomics (e.g. demographic analyses and simulations, population genetic studies based on individual genes or gene groups, genome-wide selection scans), possibly also genome analyses (e.g. assembly, annotation, analysis of structural variation), or analysis of regulatory/co-expression networks based on transcriptome data, in Arabidopsis halleri and closely related plant species
    - Publications and presentations
    - Programming in R, Python and/or Perl, implementation of existing in silico tools
    - Teaching and supervision of students
    - Data management, contribution to the management of computational resources (data storage and computing)
    - Working in interdisciplinary teams
    - Acquisition of third-party funding

Dein Profil

Your profile:

  • You hold a doctorate in population genetics, evolutionary/comparative genomics, genome analysis, bioinformatics or a comparable discipline
  • Knowledge and extensive experience in programming in R, Python and/or Perl, as well as the computational analysis and the management of large nucleic acid sequence data sets ("short read" and "long read" NGS data)
  • First authorship on at least one published (or accepted) peer-reviewed original scientific publication
  • Outstanding ability and motivation for scientific work, scientific excellence
  • Creative, analytical, independent, well-structured and well-documented working style
  • Excellent background in (population) genetics
  • Fluency in German (at least C1 level, in word and writing – required for an effective communication and for teaching in German) (

Our offerings:

  • Team-oriented cooperation in a committed, international and appreciative team
  • a job in the heart of the lively Ruhr metropolitan region with its diverse cultural offerings
  • a workplace in a green environment with direct access to the botanical garden of the Ruhr University Bochum

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is RUB’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
