Faculty of Mechanical Engineering:
Chair of Hydraulic Fluid Machinery (HSM)

In order to fill a fixed-term position in full-time (39.83 hours/week = 100%) as soon as possible, we are looking for  a

Research associates / PhD student (m/f/x) for the development of 3D CFD simulation methods for multiphase flow in hydraulic turbo machinery

The main research topic of the Chair of Hydraulic Fluid Machinery (HSM) is the development of customised CFD methods for the numerical simulation of multiphase flow in fluid machinery and their components. Application examples cover rotating and displacement machinery, injection systems and basic investigations. We focus on the customised development of numerical schemes and physical models, for example for the computation of cavitation, multiphase and multispecies fluid flow, jet break-up, bubble dynamics and turbulence. Thereby, a bridge is built from basic and methodological research to industrial research and applications on machinery.

In this research project, CFD methods for multiphase flow (gas-laden liquids) are developed and applied to rotating machinery (pumps). The prediction of head break-down due to gas accumulation within the impeller channel is in the focus. Therefore, the transition from bubbly dispersed flow to coherent gas pockets needs to be captured by a customized hybrid solver.

Your tasks:

  • Development of 3D flow simulation methods (CFD)
  • Customization of OpenFOAM
  • Multiphase modelling by enhancing our in-house hybrid Euler-Euler 2Fluid / VoF solver
  • Turbulence scale resolving simulation
  • Application to academic validation test cases and hydraulic turbo machinery (pumps)
  • High-Performance-Computing (HPC) / porting and application on large- capacity computers
  • Writing of scientific papers
  • Support of teaching
  • Close cooperation with industry and university partners

Dein Profil

Your profile:

  • Master degree in mechanical engineering, computer science, physics, applied mathematics or a related discipline
  • Above-average educational performance, particularly in (numerical) mathematics, (fluid) mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid / turbo machinery and heat and mass transfer
  • Strong background in CFD / multiphase / bubble dynamics
  • Experience with OpenFOAM software, preferably programming / developer skills
  • Teaching experience is advantageous, eg. obtained as student assistant
  • Programming skills, ideally C++
  • Proactivity, ambition and purposefulness
  • Strong communication skills, spoken and written
  • Speaking or willingness to learn German
  • Enjoying teamwork

We offer:

  • Employment at one of the largest universities in Germany within the University Alliance Ruhr
  • Options for flexible working (mobile working and teleworking)
  • Collaboration in a committed and appreciative team
  • A qualified on-boarding and induction process

Further information:

The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E13 TV-L.

Further information can be found at https://oeffentlicher-dienst.info/ (in German).

The place of work is Ruhr University Bochum.

A qualified application is expected. The load of teaching will be calculated according to § 3 of Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung (state of North Rhine-Westphalia).
At the request of the applicant (m,f,x), the staff council may be involved in selection interviews.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
