Professorship in Anglophone Literatures and Cultures (W3) (f/m/d)

YOUR TASKS
You will take on teaching duties and conduct research of an appropriately high standard in the specified area of Anglophone literatures and cultures from 1800 onwards.
You will offer courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, for some combined degrees, and also for prospective teachers of English. Your tasks will additionally include the supervision of Ph.D. candidates (literature and cultural studies), examinations, the further development of course programmes, and a range of associated administrative duties.
You will participate in joint research activities, both in the department and at faculty level, and initiate and conduct research projects which are supported by external funding. It is expected that you will be able to participate in acadamic committees as well as contribute to the further development of the faculty’s international standing.
YOUR PROFILE
Prospective candidates will have research interests covering at least two periods in English literature and cultural history from 1800 onwards. There should be a specialized focus within postcolonial or transcultural studies in one or more of the following areas: Australian Studies, Canadian Studies, Caribbean Studies. It is hoped that there may be potential for collaboration with the Centre for Australian Studies as well as the Global South Studies Center; experience in interdisciplinary cooperation will therefore be an advantage. Applicants will have excellent qualifications (Ph.D., Habilitation, or equivalent) and a record of research and outstanding publications which are in accord with the promotion and further development of research programmes at the University of Cologne. Applicants will have participated in joint research projects and should also have experience in securing external funding.
Applicants are expected to engage in research that contributes to the current research profile of the University of Cologne.
German language skills are required to fulfil the tasks in academic self-administration.

The position will be available from April 1st 2026. Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW). As a rule, the teaching load comprises nine semester hours per week (i.e., two hours per week is one 90-minute course per semester).
