The Department of Philosophy at the University of Cologne is one of the largest philosophy institutions in Germany and enjoys an international reputation due to its research centres (Thomas-Institut, Husserl-Archiv, CONCEPT and the ‘Inductive Metaphysics’ research group).

YOUR TASKS

  • This professorial appointment (W3) is targeted to the field of Philosophy and History of Medieval Philosophy with a special emphasis on the Latin tradition. A commitment to teaching in the BA, MA and teacher training programmes is expected. The future holder of the position will also be head of the Thomas-Institut. Applicants should therefore be able to lead all the specific research activities pursued at the Thomas-Institut (critical editions, conferences, international research projects, etc.) and have the relevant experience.

YOUR PROFILE

  • We are seeking an outstanding academic in the field of Medieval Philosophy and, in particular, Latin Medieval Philosophy who possesses expertise in critical editions and management experience. The successful candidate will be committed to continue developing a research institute of international standing, taking into account the interdisciplinary contexts at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Part of that is the successful acquisition and implementation of third-party-funded projects. We also expect you to contribute teaching, beyond your particular research field, in all the degree programmes of the subject group. You should be prepared to participate in joint research activities of the Faculty and in academic self-administration.


Requirements:

  • completed university degree

  • relevant PhD in philosophy

  • relevant philosophical habilitation or proof of equivalent academic achievements

  • publications in international journals / series

  • excellence in research and teaching

The position is available as of 01.10.2026. Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW). As a rule, the teaching load comprises nine semester hours per

week (i.e., two hours per week is one 90-minute course per semester).
